Trusses are an important type of structure in structural engineering.
So what is a truss?
A truss is a triangular component system that is constructed and connected such that they only produce axial forces.
These members are considered to be double force members because force is applied only at either end of the member, resulting in compressive forces or tension. They are often used as bridge designs because they can effectively span long distances. A typical truss might look like this:
What is a truss example of a truss-defining truss?
The joint is typically a pin connection such that no shear or moment forces are transmitted from the member to the member. This is a major but often misunderstood distinction between truss and frame structures.
The frame members typically employ a combination of shear, axial and bending forces; and the truss members only support axial forces.
